Taura looks less of a mess; she looks fine, if you don't know her. Her
hair is neatly braided, but she's in utilitarian gray ship knits and no
makeup, not caring enough to dress up today.
She wraps her arms around Annie immediately, holding on tight. "I'm sorry,
Annie. I was so glad when he got assigned to you, because I trusted him."
"Me, too." Her heart feels like it's in someone's fist, so she tugs Taura inside and shuts the door, takes her to the couch, clings to her. "I didn't know you were close to him, too."
"He was my dad, in a breach, the first time I met him." Taura's gained enough from breaches that she never quite lets go after unless she's given a good reason to. "And he's been so kind since then. He saw the memory that embarrasses me most during that flood when the angels invaded the Barge, and he was good to me then, too."
"He was the kindest person I've ever known." The things he survived, the betrayals he suffered, and he still, still had it in him to hurt when other people hurt. "Nothing I ever said or did made me think he looked down on me."
She has his telescope in her hands now; it hasn't been far out of reach once since he left. "What was he like as a dad, in the breach?"
"Me either." Not even her desperate proposition to Miles touched his good
opinion of her.
"He didn't get to raise me," Taura says. She wishes he had. She'd like to
have those memories. "He'd sort of fallen apart after my mother left, and
I was taken away from him. I met him again once I was grown up. He was so
sad, but he still loved me."
