Because I needed to know if I still can. If someone was in danger, maybe even me, I could still do something besides be useless.

Good. You're able to acknowledge it was a choice, now. I suppose you were still close to events, last time we talked. [Personally, Quill tries to dissect actions, especially her own, as soon as possible, but not everyone manages.]

Answering that question is why you always have to know your goal at the start.

What's the use of proving you can kill to protect yourself if it leaves you trapped in a space prison where that becomes meaningless?

I never thought about it. Never...had a goal. I don't think I even had one as a warden anymore.

I'd ask how people can live like that, but usually I've found they don't.

...You're not wrong. Most wolves just live like five, ten years after we change. But that's because there's nowhere for us to live without people noticing.

Surviving is important, and it can work as a short term goal, but without something more, that's not always enough.
